What the CPL allows you to do

The Commercial Pilot Licence is the step from flying for yourself to flying as a profession. In general terms it allows you to be paid to fly, for example in commercial operations within the privileges and ratings on your licence, and in roles such as co-pilot on larger aircraft. For pilots aiming at an airline career, the CPL is usually held together with an instrument rating while experience is built towards the Airline Transport Pilot Licence.

How the theory exams fit into the pathway

The UCAA advisory circular on licence applications (AC-PEL001) sets a minimum age of 18 for the CPL and requires a Class 1 medical certificate. English language proficiency at Operational Level 4 or above is also needed, as set out in AC-PEL025.

The knowledge requirement is described in AC-PEL018. The CPL subject titles match the PPL list: Air Law, Aircraft General Knowledge, Flight Performance and Planning, Human Performance, Meteorology, Navigation, Operational Procedures, Principles of Flight and Radio Telephony. What changes is the depth. A commercial pilot is expected to understand performance calculations, weather and regulation well enough to make decisions with paying passengers or cargo on board, so expect more applied and more detailed questions.

You need not less than 70% in each subject, and all subjects are to be passed within 3 months of the first sitting. As with every licence, the knowledge test is to be passed before the skill test.

How to use Ariguma practice for the CPL

The Ariguma Pilot Exams platform has CPL practice banks for aeroplane and helicopter candidates, covering eight subjects from Air Law to Principles of Flight. Each subject bank holds 160 practice questions with timed mock exam templates. Radio Telephony practice currently sits in the PPL bank. All of this is Ariguma practice material, not an official UCAA examination.

Suggested approach:

  • Close the gaps from your PPL. Use study mode and its explanations to find the topics you only half understood the first time.
  • Treat calculation subjects as daily practice. Flight Performance and Planning and Navigation reward little-and-often work more than last-minute revision.
  • Group your sittings. With a 3-month window, plan which subjects you will sit together and bring each one to a consistent mock-exam standard first.
  • Finish with timed mock exams. Sit them under exam conditions to rehearse pacing and decision-making under time pressure.

Details to confirm with UCAA

Frequently asked questions

Which subjects are in the CPL theory exams?

AC-PEL018 lists the same nine subject titles for the CPL as for the PPL: Air Law, Aircraft General Knowledge, Flight Performance and Planning, Human Performance, Meteorology, Navigation, Operational Procedures, Principles of Flight and Radio Telephony. The CPL papers expect a deeper, more professional level of knowledge.

What medical certificate do I need for a CPL?

A Class 1 medical certificate, issued through a UCAA-designated aviation medical examiner. Many students obtain their Class 1 early so they know they meet the standard before investing in professional training.

How long do I have to pass all the CPL subjects?

AC-PEL018 requires all subjects to be passed within 3 months of your first sitting, with not less than 70% in each subject.

Does Ariguma have Radio Telephony practice for the CPL?

Radio Telephony is a UCAA knowledge subject for the CPL. Ariguma's Radio Telephony practice bank currently sits in the PPL course, so CPL candidates can use that bank for core radio procedure practice.
