What the ATPL allows you to do
The Airline Transport Pilot Licence is the highest level of pilot licence. In general terms it allows you to act as pilot in command of aircraft engaged in commercial air transport, including multi-crew airline operations, within the type and class ratings you hold. Most pilots work towards it over several years: theory first, then the flying experience needed before the licence itself can be issued.
How the theory exams fit into the pathway
The UCAA advisory circular on licence applications (AC-PEL001) sets a minimum age of 21 for the ATPL, requires a Class 1 medical certificate and requires an instrument rating. English language proficiency at Operational Level 4 or above is also needed, as described in AC-PEL025.
AC-PEL018 lists the same nine subject titles as for the PPL and CPL: Air Law, Aircraft General Knowledge, Flight Performance and Planning, Human Performance, Meteorology, Navigation, Operational Procedures, Principles of Flight and Radio Telephony. At ATPL level the questions assume airline-style thinking: larger and more complex aircraft systems, performance planning for transport operations, crew resource management, and the regulatory framework that governs commercial air transport.
You need not less than 70% in each subject. Unlike the PPL and CPL, the ATPL window is one year from the first sitting, which gives you room to sit subjects in planned groups. As for every licence, the knowledge test is passed before the skill test.
How to use Ariguma practice for the ATPL
The Ariguma Pilot Exams platform has ATPL practice banks for aeroplane and helicopter candidates, covering eight subjects from Air Law to Principles of Flight. Each subject bank holds 160 practice questions with timed mock exam templates. Radio Telephony practice currently sits in the PPL bank. This is Ariguma practice material, not an official UCAA examination.
Ways to get the most from it:
- Build a one-year plan. Split the subjects into groups and set a target mock-exam standard for each group before you book.
- Use study mode for depth. Read the explanation for every question, including the ones you get right, because ATPL questions often turn on a detail.
- Rotate calculation practice. Keep performance, planning and navigation problems in your weekly routine even while focusing on other subjects.
- Rehearse with timed mock exams. Sit them in exam conditions shortly before each booked sitting.
Details to confirm with UCAA
Flight-experience minimums, fees, booking arrangements and sitting dates are not covered here. Confirm them with the UCAA Personnel Licensing Office or on caa.go.ug. Ariguma also offers training guidance for pilots planning an airline career path.

Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum age for an ATPL in Uganda?
The UCAA advisory circular AC-PEL001 sets the minimum age for the Airline Transport Pilot Licence at 21, compared with 18 for the CPL.
Do I need an instrument rating for the ATPL?
Yes. AC-PEL001 lists an instrument rating as a requirement for the ATPL, alongside a Class 1 medical certificate.
How long do I have to pass all the ATPL theory subjects?
AC-PEL018 allows one year from the first sitting to pass all ATPL subjects, longer than the 3-month window for the PPL and CPL. You still need not less than 70% in each subject.
Is Ariguma practice an official ATPL exam?
No. Ariguma practice material is independent study material and is not endorsed by UCAA. It is designed to help you understand the syllabus and rehearse under timed conditions.
