What the PPL allows you to do

The Private Pilot Licence is the first full pilot licence most people earn. In broad terms it lets you act as pilot in command of an aircraft of the category you trained on for private, non-commercial flying: personal travel, flying with friends and family, and building experience. It does not allow you to be paid as a pilot. For many students in Uganda it is also the foundation for a professional route towards the Commercial Pilot Licence and, later, the Airline Transport Pilot Licence.

How the theory exams fit into the pathway

Before you can be issued a PPL, the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority expects you to show both knowledge and skill. The UCAA advisory circular on licence applications (AC-PEL001) sets a minimum age of 18 for an aeroplane or helicopter PPL and requires a Class 2 medical certificate. You also need English language proficiency at Operational Level 4 or above, as described in AC-PEL025.

The theory stage is covered by AC-PEL018. It lists nine knowledge subjects: Air Law, Aircraft General Knowledge, Flight Performance and Planning, Human Performance, Meteorology, Navigation, Operational Procedures, Principles of Flight and Radio Telephony. You need not less than 70% in each subject, and all subjects are to be passed within 3 months of your first sitting. That window is the detail many candidates underestimate: once you sit your first paper, the clock is running for the rest.

The knowledge test has to be passed before the skill test. In practice this means your ground study should run alongside your early flying, so that the theory is complete before you are ready for the flight test.

How to use Ariguma practice for the PPL

The Ariguma Pilot Exams platform has separate PPL practice banks for aeroplane and helicopter candidates, covering all nine subjects. Each subject bank holds 160 practice questions, with several timed mock exam templates. This is Ariguma practice material, not an official UCAA examination.

A sensible approach:

  • Start in study mode. Work through a subject topic by topic. Each question shows an explanation, so you learn why an answer is right rather than memorising a letter.
  • Plan your sittings before you book. Because of the 3-month window, decide which subjects you will sit together and get each one to a consistent standard first.
  • Use timed mock exams as a rehearsal. Once your study-mode results are steady, sit full mock exams under time pressure to check pacing and spot weak areas.
  • Revisit weak topics, not whole subjects. Review the explanations for questions you missed and return to those topics in study mode.

Details to confirm with UCAA

This page covers the knowledge-test stage only. Minimum flight experience, exam fees, booking procedures and sitting dates are set and updated by the authority. Confirm them with the UCAA Personnel Licensing Office or on caa.go.ug before you plan your training budget or timeline. If you would like help planning your route, the Ariguma team offers training guidance alongside the practice platform.

Frequently asked questions

How many theory subjects are there for the PPL in Uganda?

UCAA advisory circular AC-PEL018 lists nine knowledge subjects for the PPL: Air Law, Aircraft General Knowledge, Flight Performance and Planning, Human Performance, Meteorology, Navigation, Operational Procedures, Principles of Flight and Radio Telephony.

What mark do I need to pass each PPL theory subject?

AC-PEL018 sets the pass mark at not less than 70% in each subject. Passing one subject well does not make up for a weak result in another, so every paper needs its own preparation.

Do I have to pass the theory exams before my flight test?

Yes. Under the UCAA process described in AC-PEL001, the knowledge test is to be passed before you take the skill test.

Are the Ariguma practice questions the real UCAA exam?

No. Ariguma practice material is independent study material. It is not an official UCAA examination and is not endorsed by UCAA. Use it to build understanding and exam technique.

Where do I find flight-hour requirements and exam fees?

Confirm current flight-experience requirements, fees and booking arrangements directly with the UCAA Personnel Licensing Office or on caa.go.ug, because these details can change.
